Born 31 August 1921, the elder brother of AR Cavanagh (O.B.), George entered the School from the Prep in 1932. He left School in 1938 to enter the timber trade. The Birkonian, November 1942, records 'Originally a day-boy he subsequently became a boarder and his upright and sincere character won him many friends. He deliberately chose to accept the hazards of Air Service and had a serious accident towards the end of 1941 from which he happily recovered'. On 7 August 1942 he was Wireless Operator/Air Gunner of Stirling N.607 of No.218 Squadron, Bomber Command, which failed to return from an operational flight, shot down by a night fighter and crashed near Kessel (Limburg). His Wing Commander wrote: 'He will be deeply missed as he was extremely popular with his colleagues. His fine character and his efficiency were much admired.' The records show that he was also Mentioned in Despatches.
