BETHESDA, Md. -- Merritt Austin Edson Jr., 72, of 6413 Dahlonega Road, Bethesda, Md., 20816-2101, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 2, 1994, at home, due to acute myocardial infarction.
Services for Mr. Edson will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Chester, Vt., on Thursday, Aug. 11, 1994, at 11:30 a.m.
Born on July 2, 1922, in Pensacola, Fla., Mr. Edson was the son of Merritt Austin and Ethel Winifred (Robbins) Edson.

Mr. Edson was awarded a B.S. degree in foreign service by Georgetown University in 1957, after having attended there from 1941 to 1943, and from 1954 to 1956. He also attended Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., from 1943 to 1944 (U.S. Navy V-12 College Training Program) and Catholic University, Washington, D.C., from 1959 to 1961 (School of Engineering and Architecture).
Mr. Edson served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946, and from 1951 to 1957. This service included a tour of duty with the 6th Marine Division on Tsingtao, China, immediately following World War II, and with the 1st Marine Division in Korea during 1953. Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1945, he rose to the rank of captain in 1952.

Mr. Edson is survived by his brother, Herbert Robbins Edson; one niece, Patricia Anne; and three nephews, David William, Merritt Austin III, and Herbert Robbins Jr.
