U.S. Senator. He served in the United States Senate, representing Connecticut from January 3, 1989 to January 3, 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Lieberman served in the Connecticut State Senate from 1971 to 1981. In 1982, he was elected Attorney General of Connecticut, serving for a term and a half when he resigned in the middle of his second term to serve the United States Senate seat held by Republican Sen. Lowell Weicker, whom he defeated. After Vice President Al Gore secured the Democratic Presidential Nomination for the 2000 Presidential Election, Lieberman became the first Jewish Vice Presidential candidate on the national ticket for a major American political party when he was selected as Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 Presidential Election. Gore and Lieberman ran against Texas Governor George W. Bush and former Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, but narrowly lost the election by a few hundred votes in Florida, giving Gore and Lieberman 266 Electoral Votes compared to Bush and Cheney's 271.
