In September 1985, he was selected to take part in the Intercosmos spaceflight program. He took part in the Soyuz TM-3 to the Mir space station flight, spending 7 days, 23 hours, and 5 minutes in space. For his service, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 30 July 1987; he was also awarded the Order of Lenin. He was admitted to the private Sanko Hospital in the Turkish where he passed away at the age of 72.
