I've picked up some information about Mary Sheldon Lord Pierpont's burial but I haven't fully resolved the mystery. I spent some time in downtown Boston last week at the New England Historic & Genealogical Society, and during my searches I found Rev John Pierpont's last will on microfilm, written in 1861 and probated in 1866. In it, he directs that his body be laid to rest as follows:
"Let my mortal remains be interred in my lot in the Medford Rural Cemetery, in the centre of the upper end of the lot, by the side of, and on a line with, the grave of my deceased wife, Mary Sheldon, - leaving an equal space on the east, or left of my grave, for that of my present wife, Harriet Louise; and there, unless during her life she expresses a wish to the contrary, either verbally or by placing herself in such relation to another as to make such a disposition of her mortal past improper, impossible, or inconvenient, it is my will and appointment that it shall be laid, when her mortal shall have put [sic] on immortality. And I leave it to my children to determine what memorial stone, and whether any or none, shall be set to indicate where my remains, or those of any of my family, repose. It is of little moment to me or them"
This tells us where Mary was buried when she died in 1855, but it doesn't tell us whether or not her actual remains (or his, for that matter) were moved when one or more of their children arranged for a memorial to be erected at Mt Auburn Cemetery. Mt Auburn records are quite thorough and should reveal this detail if I ever get there! Unfortunately, I had a full schedule and didn't have time to do so when I was in the area last week.
Medford Rural Cemetery was established in 1853 and is now called "Oak Grove Cemetery".
