Add PhotosIn the year 1771, a congregation of Scotch (Associate) Presbyterians, also known as the Seceders, led by Reverend Dr. William Marshall, who had come to Philadelphia as a missionary of the Anti-Burgher Synod of the Associate Presbyterian Church, built this church upon the south side of Spruce Street, west from Third Street. They had been worshipping in a farm house at Fourth and Shippen Streets with the Reverend David Telfair who had come to America in 1766.
During the British occupancy the Spruce Street church was used as a Hessian hospital. Dr. Marshall built the house adjoining in 1786. About this time, through dissensions among his flock, the pastor and his faction withdrew. Five years later they erected a new church upon Walnut Street, west of Fourth Street.
In 1822, the Scots' Church withdrew from the Associate Reformed Church and became the Eighth Presbyterian Church — a name it assumed only a short time before again becoming the Scots' Church.
The congregation met in the Spruce Street Church until 1854, then they removed to the southwest corner of Broad and Lombard Streets.
In 1883, the congregation united with the South Broad Street Presbyterian Church, organized the same year at the southeast corner of Broad Street and Castle Avenue, and removed thither. "Old Scots'" was torn down the following year.
The burial ground at this Spruce Street location was used from 1771 until it was sold in 1885, and most of the graves were removed to other cemeteries.
