Add PhotosPfeiffer's Burial Ground was established by Dr. Joseph Pfeiffer, who, by a will made shortly before his death in 1804, devised unto his son, George Pfeiffer, "all that piece of ground, by me laid off of my four acre lot for a burial place for my family, situate on the East side of Delaware Fourth Street continued in said Liberties and at the distance of about fifty six feet Northward from Poplar Lane, containing in breadth North and South thirty feet and in length extending East and West to the line of John Peters' ground, to hold the same lot or piece of ground with the appurtenances to him the said George Pfeiffer and his heirs forever in trust only for the use and purpose of a family burying ground or place for all my family, offspring and descendants to bury and lay their dead forever."
Upon Dr. Pfeiffer's death, he was interred in the burial ground, joining two grandchildren of his who were interred there upon their deaths several years previous.
Dr. Pfeiffer's remains, along with other family members who were subsequently interred there, were removed to Section 2, Lots 195-196, of South Laurel Hill Cemetery on January 23, 1851.
