Civil War soldier from Lockport, New York. One of the 600+ men from Niagara County who lost their lives in the war.

Jacob Armstrong was born around 1826 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1850 he married Eveline Thornton, also from Bloomsburg. They had one daughter, Martha, born about 1852 in Bloomsburg. Sometime between 1855 and 1860, the family moved to Lockport, New York. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Jacob was among the first from Niagara County to volunteer for the Union, enlisting as a private in the 28th NY Infantry at Lockport. He was seriously wounded at the battle of Cedar Mountain in August 1862, and was discharged from the service because of disability he incurred in the battle.
After resting a year, he was determined to fight again. Another Niagara regiment, the 8th NY Heavy Artillery had a recruiting office at Lockport and were looking for volunteers to fill the ranks of the unit, which was stationed at Baltimore at that time. Jacob enlisted with the 8th in November 1863, and was shipped out to Baltimore in December. His service was short lived, however, as he became ill in April 1864, and dying in May while the regiment was still in Baltimore. His family chose to have his body interred at Bloomsburg, and what became of his wife and daughter after his death has not been determined.
