Richard Symons enlisted on February 3, 1940. He completed boot camp in San Diego, and boarded a Naval transport bound for Shanghai shortly thereafter. In July, 1940, Pvt Symons joined Company A, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines in Shanghai, China. He served with them through the rest of the year and was promoted to Private First Class. PFC Richard Symons traveled with the 4th Marines to the Philippines in late 1941 to help prepare defenses against the predicted Japanese attack. He fought through the Philippine campaign and participated in the siege of Corregidor. PFC Symons was killed on May 6, 1942, when the Japanese overran Corregidor. His exact fate is unknown. He is still listed as MIA.
