The following from "The Ancestors of Marlys Strand Jeppson"
When Permelia was eleven, she moved with her parents and brothers and sisters in an ox-drawn wagon across the plains to Unionville, Iowa. This arduous journey took twelve weeks. She later recalled anxieties of that trip caused by Indians and wild animals. Then they moved to Schuyler County, Missouri.
Permelia was illiterate. She never learned to sign her name.
The first year of her married life she and John camped in a covered wagon on a wooded Mississippi River island or islands, and John cut timber. Permelia spoke of "the men" being gone overnight, so there were apparently other families. Nevertheless, she was lonely and had little to occupy her time. (Apparently John's children were not with them.) At night it was scary. Wolves were sometimes attracted to the wagon. Permelia would build a good fire and always have plenty of wood gathered to keep it burning brightly throughout the night. She could see the forms of animals, but they kept a distance because of the fire. Because it was lonely, and she needed a pastime, she began smoking a pipe.
When they lived in the Moulton area, Permelia told of seeing soldiers ride past their place during the Civil War. Sometimes they would stop to rest, water their horses, and asked for food. One time five or six rode into the yard at night. John got dressed and went out to talk to them until they left. As he didn't return quickly, Permelia also got dressed and slipped out quietly so she could hear the conversation. She was worried they would take John with them to join the fighting. John visited with them until they were ready to leave.
From the 1900 census, at the age of 60, Permelia states that she had 17 children, with 12 living. Again in 1910 12 children were still living. In 1920 she is now a widow and living with her daughter Ina and son-in-law Earl Shaver.
