Actor. A highly-versatile performer, he will probably be best remembered for playing 'Richard Gilmore' in the TV Series "The Gilmore Girls" (2000 to 2007). Raised in Michigan, he attended Bucknell University and later with the aid of a Fulbright Scholarship, he studied drama at London's Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He marked his motion picture debut with an uncredited part in "Lady Liberty" (1971) and followed this with roles of substance in "The Paper Chase" (1973), "The Day of the Dolphin" (1973), "The Great Gatsby" (1974), "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1974) and "Reds" (1981). He debut on Broadway with "The Moon Children" (1972), earned a Tony Award for "Mrs. Warren's Profession" (1976) and received a nomination with "Plenty" (1983). Herrmann received Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of Franklin Roosevelt in "Franklin and Eleanor" (1976) and "Franklin and Eleanor: The White House Years" (1977). He earned additional Emmy Award nominations with "St. Elsewhere" (1986 and 1987) and won an Emmy for "The Practice" (1999). He remained active as he appeared in several episodes of the series "The Good Wife". He died following a battle with brain cancer.
