2nd Lt George Treptow was a pilot with Marine Fighting Squadron 224 (VMF-224) during the Battle of Guadalcanal flying F4F Wildcats. On 2 October 1942, Guadalcanal's radar picked up a large flight of small fast planes approaching Henderson Field at 1230. 30 minutes later a flight of approximately 30 Japanese Zeroes and some bombers appeared. 2ndLt Treptow was among the pilots scrambled to engage the Japanese aircraft. In the ensuing aerial combat 2ndLt Treptow was shot down by a Japanese zero. His plane landed within Marine lines on Guadalcanal however it burned up on impact. (Provided by Member #47541579)
