Pvt Edwards was Killed in Action, while setting up his mortar, during heavy fighting with Japanese forces near the Lunga River on Guadalcanal.
Following the battle, Edwards with the other Marines killed during the fighting were buried on site.
In 1947, unsuccessful attempts were made to locate the graves. Edwards' remains are still buried where he was killed on Guadalcanal.
