Author. Known for his best-selling novel "The Bridges of Madison County" (1992), which was made into a 1995 motion picture adaptation starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Born in the small Midwestern town of Rockford, Iowa, his father was the proprietor of a produce and dairy business, his mother was a homemaker. Waller attended the University of Northern Iowa and later Indiana University Bloomington's Kelley School of Business where he attained his doctorate. He served as an Economics professor at the University of Northern Iowa from 1968 until 1991. A trip with a friend for which included taking pictures of backroads and covered bridges inspired him to write his first novel, "The Bridges of Madison County". Among his other books include: "A Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend" (1993), "Puerto Vallarta Squeeze" (1995), "Border Music" (1995), "A Thousand Country Roads" (2002), "High Plains Tango" (2005) and "The Long Night of Winchell Dear" (2007). He died of complications from multiple myeloma.
