Vocalist. Curtis was the former lead vocalist of the 1960s soul group The Foundations. He moved to England as a 15-year-old and became a professional boxer, but he preferred music and joined the group that eventually became The Foundations. Between 1966 and 1967, he was the lead vocalist on popular tracks 'Back On My Feet Again' and 'Any Old Time (You're Lonely and Sad)' in addition to 'Baby Now That I've Found You', which is believed to be the first chart-topping single in the United Kingdom by a British multiracial band. In 1968, he departed the band but stuck around long enough to help his former band mates find his replacement and was no longer in the group when the band released its biggest hit, 'Build Me Up Buttercup', which cracked the Top 3 on the Billboard charts in America. Curtis performed as a solo artist in the 1970s and continued touring in the years leading up to his death.
