Murphy, who was the older brother of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, had a prolific career as a co-writer, most notably many of his younger brother's films, including 'Vampire in Brooklyn' (1995) and 'Norbit' (2007). He also appeared in minor acting roles in films, including 'Harlem Nights' (1989), 'Mo' Better Blues' (1990), 'The Pompatus of Love' (1996), 'Death of a Dynasty' (2003), 'Night at the Museum' (2006), 'Our Family Wedding' (2010) and 'Meet the Blacks' (2016). On television he appeared regularly on such shows as 'Chappelle's Show', 'The Boondocks', 'Are We There Yet?' and guest starred on 'Martin', 'Saturday Night Live', 'Wild 'n Out', 'Nite Tales: The Series', 'Lopez Tonight' and 'We Got to Do Better'. Murphy died from complications of leukemia.
