Actress. Raised by her mother in San Francisco and later in New York City, she studied ballet at the Robert Joffrey School of Ballet. She continued her studying of Modern Dance at the Martha Graham Studios, in addition to graduating from the High School of Performing Arts with high honors. She made her film debut in the short "Bowery Dawn" (1972) and went on to stage productions, prior to appearing in the picture "Four Friends" (1981). In 1984, she received a Theatre World Award for the off-Broadway production "The Philanthropist" and one year later (1985), she earned a Drama Desk Award for "Balm in Gilead." She will perhaps be remembered for playing 'Iris Holland' (Richard Dreyfuss' wife) in the film "Mr. Holland's Opus" (1995). To television audiences, she will be remembered for playing 'Dr. Abby Keaton' in the series "E.R." (1994) and as 'Karen Stottlemeyer' in the show "Monk" (2003 to 2006). Other film credits include "Dick Tracy" (1990) and "Bastard Out of Carolina" (1996, Emmy Award nomination). She received an additional Emmy Award nomination for the TV-Mini series "Lonesome Dove" (1989). Additional TV credits include "Encore! Encore! (1998 to 1999), "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Grey's Anatomy." She was formerly married to actor John Malkovich.
