After producing multiple seasons as a steady defenseman with the Fort William Canadiens and Winnipeg Warriors (1957 to 1960), Johns was promoted to the NHL with the New York Rangers during the 1960-1961 season and formed a formidable defensive core with Bill Gadsby and Lou Fontinato. Johns had the distinction of being a part of the Minnesota North Stars roster during their inaugural season of 1967-1968.
