Motion Picture Director. Hooper will best remembered for directing the horror classic films 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' and 'Poltergeist'. Born Willard Tobe Hooper, he taught college before starting out making documentaries. His 1974 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' became a seminal horror title for its realistic approach and deranged vision. The film, featuring the character Leatherface, tells the story of a group of unfortunate friends who encounter a group of cannibals on their way to visit an old homestead. It went on to become one of the most profitable independent films of the 1970s in the U.S. Hooper also directed the 1986 sequel 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2'. The 1982 film 'Poltergeist', written and produced by Steven Spielberg, was a box office success for MGM and became the eighth-highest grossing film for that year. Other credits include the 1976 thriller 'Eaten Alive', a 1986 remake of 'Invaders from Mars' and the 1990 horror film 'Spontaneous Combustion'.
