Mrs. Chandler was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Amory, the daughter of Everett Dalgas and Vivian Moore Hansen. She graduated from Amory High School and the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. After graduating from college, she began her teaching career in the Okolona Public School System, where she taught for 31 years. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Okolona, where she was involved with the children's ministry, teaching Sunday School for 45 years. She was a past president and past member of the Okolona Lanier Club. She was an active supporter of the Excel Cancer Support Group in Okolona and the Save Okolona Society.
Bettye was dearly loved and will be missed by her many family and friends. We thank God for the influence she has made in our lives and rejoice in the blessed assurance that she is now at home with her Lord and Savior.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2006, at the First Baptist Church of Okolona with the Rev. Roger Smith and the Rev. David Eldridge officiating. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors Okolona Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Robert Walter Chandler Sr., whom she married July 1, 1952; her daughter, Carol Chandler Drane and her husband, Walton, of Pearl; one brother, Everett Dalgas Hansen and his wife, Jan, of Baton Rouge; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Chandler of Okolona; five grandchildren, Walt Drane Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Pearl, Heather Chandler of Chattanooga, Tenn., Taylor Beard, Ashley Chandler and Cole Chandler of Okolona.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, Walter Chandler Jr.
Pallbearers will be John Holloway, Jerry Rogers, Gib Wise, Tommy Rogers, Thermon Mitchell and Andy Young.
Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Miskelly and Dr. John Ed Harris.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
