Willie Camma Byrd was in utero when her father, William Cam Byrd, was shot and killed by Mell Maples. Her mother died when she was twelve. Her stepfather, Dan Gann, remarried. She married Murrell Barnett when she was seventeen before her stepfather moved to North Carolina with his last wife. Willie and Murrell had been married over eleven years when he died from inhaling peanut shells into his windpipe.

With three young children to raise, Willie decided to remarry. This second union with Sam Wiseman produced five more children. They were married over forty years.

Willie wished to be buried next to her first love when she died, and so she is buried with Murrell Barnett.

Willie was missing two fingers on her right hand. When she was a baby, her brother was pulling her around in a wagon. Her sister, Cora, was playing with the axe. Willie set her fingers down on the stump just as Cora brought the axe down. My Aunt Ruby said that Willie's fingers were buried in their own grave.

Willie was always in the kitchen. She would pull things out of her extensive garden and cook them up fresh. She was Pentecostal and wore her long hair up in a bun every day until she was old and the long hair was too much for her. I only saw it down a couple of times when she was combing her thick, white hair.

Willie was very religious and loved to sing church songs. I was told that she served as a midwife for many women.
