OBITUARY - 23 Oct 1973

ALFRED RANUM RITES HELD AT VIKING TODAY


Funeral services for Alfred Ranum, 95, of this city, were held today (Wednesday)at 11 a.m., at Viking. Ranum, a former resident of the Viking community, died Sunday at Northwestern hospital.


Rev. Ralph Hofrenning officiated at the services. Mrs. Ralph Hofrenning was the organist and Rev. Delano Lind sang two selections. Interment was in the Golden Valley cemetery, near Wannaska. The Green Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were Gerald, Keith, Roger, David and Daryl Ranum, and Daniel Bates.


Alfred Ranum, a son of the late Knute and Siri Ranum, was born Feb. 28, 1878 in Filmore county. In 1881, he moved with his parents to Marshall county. Later he homesteaded in Golden Valley township, Roseau county, near Wannaska.


In August of 1906, he was united in marriage at Wannaska to Hulda Johnson, daughter of John Johnson & Ellen Peterson Johnson. The couple lived in the Wannaska community, where he served as postmaster of Casperson and was active in church and community affairs. His wife died in November of 1924. The following year, he moved to Viking.


In June of 1934, he was united in marriage to Clara Olson Ranum, widow of his late brother Oscar Ranum. The couple farmed in New Solum and the VIking community until retirement in 1951, when they moved into the village of Viking. In 1966 they came to Thief River Falls where they have since resided.


He is survived by his wife, four sons; Lolyd and Sam Ranum, both of Viking, Sidney of Ventura, California and Stanley of Thief River Falls; five daughters: Mrs. Elmer (Isabel) Krohn of Willmar, Mrs. Goerge (Alice) Kezar of Warroad, Mrs. Albert (Elsie) Hodik of Thief River Falls, Mrs. Sheldon (Delores) Forland of Minneapolis and Mrs. Delano (Margaret) Lind of Sioux Falls, S.D.


Also four step-children: Mrs. William (Marceline) Grundhaus of Thief River Falls, Oral Ranum of Stanley, N.D., Maynard Ranum of Farmington, and Oscar Ranum of Isanti; 59 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.


Also surviving are six brothers: Bernard, Bennie, John and Otto Ranum, all of Thief River Falls, Fred Ranum of Viking and Edward Ranum of Brandon, Sask., Canada; a sister, Mrs. George (Ruth) Stinar of Warren; and one step-sister, Mrs. Charles (Lotie) Swortzel of Montana.


In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter and three sons.
