Lloyd C. Larson 88, passed away, Thursday, July 15th 2010 at his home, only two miles from where he was born, although during his lifetime he had traveled around the world.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 19, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Burial will follow at Opdahl Cemetery, rural Newfolden, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
Lloyd Clarence Larson was born to Alfred and Gena (Haugen) Larson on December 22, 1921 in a log home in New Maine township, Marshall County, MN.
Lloyd spoke Norwegian until he was 7 years old, then his cousin Otis Robison taught him English. He attended Blackberg School, a country school north of Newfolden. As a boy he enjoyed skiing to his cousins homes, hunting, and trapping. In the summer he herded cattle. At eighteen he spent some time in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Bena, MN, planting trees.
On September 23, 1942 he was drafted into the army. In January 1943, he boarded the ship U.S.S. Monticello and left from Riverside, California, He then stopped in New Zealand and Australia before reaching Bombay, India. The trip took forty-three days. He then took a train, steam boat, another train, and walked for 7 days to reach the destination of Ledo (in the province of Assam, India.)
His company took Dr. Seagrave's (author of the book The Burma Surgeon) patients and moved them to a different hospital. He served as a medic in the China, Burma, India theater of the war. He served in the army for three years, and was discharged on October 25, 1945. Upon discharge from the army he qualified as a Physicians Assistant.
After the war, he farmed in New Maine Township from 1945 to 1952. He then moved to Minneapolis and worked at Archer Daniels Midland Manufacturing. In 1953, he met his wife to be, Donnis Yvonne Bolstad. They were married October 2nd 1954.
In 1966, they moved to New Maine township where he lived for the rest of his life. They farmed with dairy and beef cattle, chicken, and sheep. He welded at Arctic Cat, droved trucks during harvesting, and worked as a dry waller. He also did repair work and custom welding for friends and neighbors.
He is survived by seven children: Nancy (Alan) Molstad of Grand Forks; Robert (Marcy) Larson of Mosinee, WI; Bryan Larson of Newfolden; Ellen Latta of Newfolden; Dave Larson of Newfolden; Dawn (Luke) Englund of Karlstad; Darren (Kari) Larson of Newfolden; nine grandchildren: Annie (Luke) Wood and Amanda (Josh) Dux, Jacob (Tricia) Larson and Vanessa (Anthony) Prose, Ian and Kimberly Latta, Joseph and Samuel Englund, Jazlynn Larson; four great grandchildren: Blake and Brady Wood, Kaden and Nathan Dux; and sister Della Geske of Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Donnis in 1995; son Larry in 2000; and brother Melvin in 1992.
