US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Earl Raymond Hannum enlisted in the Marine Corps 6 September 1927 from Floyd Iowa. Completed recruit training MCB San Diego. Assigned HQ Company MCB San Diego as a truck driver. April 1928 assigned Marine Observation Squadron 8 (VMO 8) NAS San Diego as an Aircraft Mechanic. Attended technical school at Great Lakes and reported to Marine Fighter Squadron 6 (VMF 6) NAS San Diego December 1928. June -October 1930 he attended Student Naval Aviation Pilot at NAS Pensacola but did not achieve Pilot Status. Assigned to Marine Scouting Squadron 6 (VO 6) MB Quantico as Air Crew and Room Orderly. May 1932 Marine Fighter Squadron 10 (VMF 10) NAS San Diego then NAS Seattle where he was discharged in September 1931.

Re enlisted 27 July 1933, completed to Sea School MCB San Diego. October 1933 assigned A Company MB Pearl Harbor as a Truck Driver. October 1935 assigned to Marine Utility Squadron 2 NAS San Diego. Promoted to PFC July 1936, Promoted to Cpl November 1936, Promoted to Sgt November 1939, Promoted to SSgt January 1940, Promoted to Technical Sgt December 1940. January 1941 Transferred to Marine Scout Bomber Squadron 231 (VMSB) and deployed to MCAS Ewa Hawaii. 27 July 1941Re enlisted for third enlistment. November 1941 TSgt Hannum and a group of experienced mechanics, technicians, and armorers embarked on the USS Wright ( AV-1) to Wake Island to form the ground echelon. 8 December 1941 - 23 December 1941 participated in combat operations Wake Island. 12 January 1942 taken aboard as POW on a Japanese Vessel for transport to Japan. 22 January 1942 executed by beheading.
