Viva was born in Tennessee, the son of Viva Bishop (1895-1921) and Mary Elizabeth Sutton (1898-1929). After his parents' deaths, he was raised by his grandparents, Dan & Agatha Bishop, in Lone Oak, Texas.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1939 at the age of eighteen and served aboard the cruiser USS Houston. The ship was sunk on 1 March 1942, during the battle of Sunda Strait, and Corporal Bishop was listed as missing in action.He was declared dead on 15 December 1945.
