Scheib joined the Marine Corps Reserve on 29 April 1937 in Los Angeles, California. He attended regular drills every week with the Thirteenth Battalion, Organized Marine Corps Reserve in Santa Monica.

Robert Scheib was promoted to Private First Class on 01 October 1938, and to Corporal on 01 July 1939.

In November 1940, he reenlisted for another three years and was transferred to active duty assigned to Company I (India ), 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. Corporal Scheib was sent to Shanghai, China where he joined Company B, First Battalion, Fourth Marines. He was there by July 1941.

With the possibility of war on the horizon the Fourth Marines were moved to the Philippines in November 1941. He was sent to Fort Mills, Corregidor where Company B was part of the island defenses. He would have been there during the the siege of Corregidor.

On the night of 05 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island and overwhelmed the garrison, which surrendered at 1200 hours the following day. Corporal Scheib was among those killed in the attack on 06 May 1942. His body was seen after the battle, but his burial site was not reported and his remains have not been recovered.
