US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II
Joseph Kadlec enlisted in the Marine Corps 19 April 1941 from Cedar Rapids Iowa. Completed recruit training 1st Recruit Training Battalion MCB San Diego. June 1941 assigned Radio Company, Base Signal Battalion, MCB San Diego for communications training. 5 November 1941 embarked the USS Chaumont (AP-5)at San Diego for Hawaii. 29 November 1941 left Pearl Harbor for Manila.
7 December 1941 upon declaration of war USS Chaumont diverted to Suva, Fiji, Brisbane then Darwin, Australia. 5 January 1943 debarked at Darwin. 7 January 1942 Pvt Kadlec and 6 other Marines embarked the USS Houston (CA-30). January – February participated in combat operations aboard the USS Houston Battle of Makassar Strait, Battle of Java Sea, escorting convoys, engaging air attacks.
USS Houston was sunk during the evening of 28 February - 1 March 1942 during the Battle of Sundra Strait. Of the 1,061 Sailors and Marines on board 368 survived to be taken captive.
Private Kadlec was Killed in Action and lost at sea. Declared dead by Secretary of the Navy 15 December 1945.
Remains Not Recovered.
