Sven Elmer Roland Nelson (known as Sven) was a rear-seat gunner aboard 2Lt. E. Walton Ayres' SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber. While returning from a routine search mission on 2 October 1942, they were shot down by pilots of the 6th kokutai over Savo Island.

Both Nelson and Ayres (Find A Grave Memorial# 56786714) were declared dead on 3 December 1945.
