Son of Fredrick Franklin Bair, Sr. (12 August 1883 Missouri - bet April 1930 and 1932) and Rosa Avis Williams (23 February 1893 Illinois - 18 October 1975 Washington)

1930 United States Federal Census (07 April 1930): Kellyville, Creek County, Oklahoma (sheet 5B, family 123, 122 Holly Street) – Fred Bair, Jr. (9 Kansas).

After his father's death the family fled the Dust Bowl in 1932 and drove to Raymond, Washington, where an older brother was working as a longshoreman.

1940 United States Federal Census (03 May 1940): Raymond (Ward 3), Pacific County, Washington (sheet 3A, household 53) – Fred Bair (19 Kansas, laborer). His family had lived in Kellyville, Creek County, Oklahoma in 1935. Fred had completed 3 years of high school.

Frederick Franklin Bair (22, 01 February 1918 Caney, Kansas), a resident of 106 Laurel Ave., Raymond, Pacific County, Washington, signed up for his World War II Draft Registration Card (Serial No. 671, Order No. 1402) on 16 October 1940 in Raymond, Pacific County, Washington. He was employed by Bonneville Power Administration at the Raymond Sub Station. Fred listed his mother, Mrs. Rosa Avis Bair as the person who would always know his address. He was described as 6' 1" in height, 182 lbs., with a ruddy complexion, black hair and brown eyes.

Frederick F. Bair, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 07 December 1940 in Seattle, Washington.

Hospital Apprentice Second Class Frederick F. Bair, Jr. (Service No. 385-93-98). He was received on board the battleship U.S.S. Maryland (BB-46) also known as "Old Mary" on 31 July 1941 from RS, PSNY, Wn. FFT ASTA, via RS, San Francisco, California. He was sailing from Bremerton, Washington to San Francisco, California.

Hospital Apprentice Second Class Frederick F. Bair, Jr. (Service No. 385-93-98). He was a passenger aboard the troop transport U.S.S. HENDERSON sailing from San Francisco, California to Pearl Harbor, T. H. R/S San Francisco FFT ASTA for assignment. On 16 September 1941 he was transferred to COM Sixteen (Manila Bay, P. I.) for assignment.

On 08 December 1941 war with Japan broke out. The rapid advance of the Japanese led General Douglas MacArthur to abandon Manila and to declare it an open city on 26 December 1941 and order the withdraw of American and Filipino troops on Luzon to the Bataan peninsula.

At some point over the next couple of days Hospital Apprentice First Class Frederick F. Bair, Jr., USN was sent over to Fort Mills, Corregidor, P. I. and assigned to Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Fourth Marines.

Hospital Apprentice First Class/Pharmacist Mate Third Class Frederick F. Bair, Jr. On 01 January 1942 he was sick in hospital. By 30 April 1942 Fred had been promoted to Pharmacist Mate Third Class and listed as U.S. Navy personnel.

On 09 April 1942, Filipino and U.S. forces on Bataan were surrendered and the Japanese were able to mass artillery for an all-out attack of the Rock from just 2 miles away. A virtual rain of shells and bombs saturated the island during April, resulting in the destruction of most beach defenses.

Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class Frederick Bair participated in the defense of Corregidor as a corpsman.

On the night of 5-6 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island and overwhelmed the garrison, which surrendered at 1200 hours the following day. Corpsman Bair was among those killed in the attack. His body was spotted several days after the surrender, lying under a lumber pile beside a water tower at Monkey Point – however, it is not known where, or if, Bair was subsequently buried. Bair, Jr., PhM3c, USN., that said body was lying under a lumber pile near the water tower on Monkey Point, Corregidor Island, Philippine Islands.
