Son of Peter H. Mattern (1889-1945) and Mary Simon (1889-).

John A. Mattern enlisted as a Private in the United States Marine Corps on 01 March 1938.

January 1940 - Private Mattern is stationed at Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, Cavite, Philippine Islands. He sailed from San Diego, California on the 14th of November aboard the U.S.S. Henderson and disembarked at Manila.

When war broke out on 08 December 1941 and Cavite was bombed, he was transferred to Fort Mills, Corregidor and assigned to Company K, Third Battalion, 4th Marines as part of the island defenses. The final surviving muster (April 1942) before the surrender, shows him on Corregidor with the rank of Private First Class.

On the night of 05 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island and overwhelmed the garrison, which surrendered at 1200 hours the following day. Private First Class Mattern was among those killed in the attack. His body was seen after the battle, but his burial site was not reported and his remains have not been recovered.

Private First Class John Arnald Mattern is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing - United States Marine Corps at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
