Born and raised in Riverside, New Jersey; attended Riverside High School with Matthew J. "Mat" Kirchner. Eastburn and Kirchner enlisted in the Marine Corps together on 2 February 1942, receiving sequential service numbers. Both were assigned to Charlie Company, First Battalion, 5th Marines.

On 1 November 1942, C/1/5 encountered strong Japanese defensive positions near Guadalcanal's Matanikau River and suffered 27 fatal casualties in a single day. Among the dead were Eastburn and Kirchner. Their remains were buried in the field; neither were recovered after the war.

Kirchner is memorialized at Beverly National Cemetery (Memorial 107219133) and the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial (Memorial 56767903).
