United States Navy Admiral. A 1915 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he served in several ships during World War I, and eventually commanded early United States Navy submarines on two different occasions. He was considered an expert on naval logistics, serving as Logistics advisor in several commands before and during World War II. He commanded the Battleship Division 3 during the battle for Okinawa island in 1945. After the war he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet, and as Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic under NATO. In 1958 a United States Navy guided missile destroy was name the "USS Lynde McCormick (DDG-8)" in his honor.
