A. Otto Anderson, 72, died at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D., on Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 4, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden, with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Casket bearers included Leslie Folden, Gary Leader, Mervin Munter, Milton Erickson, Harold Lee and Kevin Helm. Interment was held at Opdahl Cemetery in Newfolden.
August Otto Anderson, the son of the late Edward and Florence (Peltola) Anderson, was born on August 7, 1934, in Spruce Valley Township of Marshall County, near Middle River, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and attended the former 47 Monroe School near his home. He later attended the Northwest School of Agriculture at Crookston.
Otto farmed with his father, milking cows, and following the death of his father in 1957, he and his mother, Florence, went into Grade A milk operation. In 1958, he started the Farmers Shipping Assn. of Middle River. Otto served on the Spruce Valley Town Board for 18 years and on the Middle River-Snake River Watershed Board.
On Oct. 20, 1973, Otto was united in marriage to Evelyn Nelson. The couple made their home in Spruce Valley Township and also at Roseau for several years. He worked for Tower & Tank Manufacturing in Hallock, Toreq Manufacturing and Hydra Mac in Thief River Falls and at Polaris Industries in Roseau.
Otto had a passion for creating items out of wood and metal and sharing them with family and friends.
He and Evelyn operated the pool hall in Newfolden for several years, as well. Evelyn passed away June 6, 1997.
Otto had resided at the Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad and was presently at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Warren.
He is survived by one son: Clifford (Lynette) Nelson, of Newfolden; two grandchildren; one brother, Maynard Anderson of Hallsville, Mo.; in addition to several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Otto was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
