Religious Leader, Educator. He was the founder of Mercer University which was originally located in Penfield, Georgia, later to be relocated to Macon, Georgia. In 1810 the third edition of his hymnal, "The Cluster of Spiritual Songs," was printed in Augusta, Georgia; later additions appeared in Philadelphia and New York. He purchased the "Christian Index" (formerly the "Columbian Star") in 1833. It is the nation's oldest continuously published religious newspaper. He served as clerk of the Georgia Baptist Association from 1795 until 1816, and from 1816 to 1839 as its moderator. He helped organize the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1822 and served as its president from that time until his death in 1841. His book, "A History of the Georgia Baptist Association" was published in 1838.
