Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was serving as Deputy Paymaster General in the United States Regular Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel when the Civil War broke out. He subsequently served as Chief Paymaster first for the Department of West Virginia and the Monongahela, then for the Department of the Pacific. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services in the Pay Dept. during the War". He retired from the Army in 1872 at his Lieutenant Colonel's rank.
