Motion Picture Director, Producer, Screenwriter. He was a renowned English film director for over four decades with over sixty films to his credit. Educated at Kings School, Canterbury and Dulwich College, he first worked as actor then various jobs as director on a series of the short films "Quota Quickies" at Denham and Pinewood Studios. Going on, he soon celebrated his partnership with screenwriter Emeric Pressburger, producing and directing a series of classic British films. Among his many works are: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), A Canterbury Tale (1944), I Know Where I'm Going! (1945), A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951), Peeping Tom (1960) and Age of Consent (1969). He also directed episodes of the British TV series "The Defenders", "Espionage" and "The Nurses". He died at age 84 and his gravestone was designed by his son Columba who appeared in some of his films.
