Shimonoski Expedition Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Colour Sergeant, Captain of the After Guard, British Royal Navy. At Shimonoski, Japan, September 6, 1864, Colour Sergeant Pride with two campanions were from the HMS Euryalus when they carried the Queen's Colour into action in the capture of the enemy's stockade. They kept the flag flying in spite of the fierce fire which killed one of the his comrades and Colour Sergeant Pride being severely wounded. He did not falter and was only finally prevented from going further forward by direct orders from their superior officer. For most extreme courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
