Ron Schmidutz, 80, of Fostoria, joined His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday March 22, 2017 surrounded by his beloved family at his home in Fostoria.

He was born on October 6, 1936 in Detroit, MI to Raymond and Margaret (Rairick) Schmidutz. He married Joyce Ann Hayman of Carey on September 18, 1965 and they later divorced. On August 25, 2001 he married Mary (Porthouse) Kerr at St. Wendelin Catholic Church and she survives Ron.

Other survivors include his son, James (Deneen) of Sarasota, FL; daughter, Lea Ann Jones of Van Buren; grandchildren, Spencer and Jaley Schmidutz of Zurich Switzerland and Blake and Kennedy Jones of Van Buren; sisters, Rheyma (Joe) Kelbley of Fostoria, Paula Zackrisson of Toledo and Peg (Rick) Swartz of Bowling Green; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; newborn sister, Mary; grandparents, Edward and Bessie (Haines) Schmidutz, John and Mary (Decker) Rairick.

Ron graduated from Tiffin Calvert High School in 1954 and entered the Air Force in 1955 with close friends Jim Rochester, Dave Omlor, Terry Reaster and Dick Zeis. He served as an explosive ordinance disposal technician during the Korean War. Ron worked at Auto-Lite, Fostoria for thirty years, retiring in 1996.

Ron’s lifelong passion was his love of cars and motorcycles. From a very young age he would work on his father’s and uncle’s cars. This grew into an early occupation of automotive repair and later into his passion of building hot rods of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. He enjoyed hosting his annual 1950’s style Barn Party for twenty years.

Ron’s love of cars was eclipsed only by his love of family and friends. He was a “people person,” and stopping to talk with everyone he saw. He loved helping others, especially if it involved finding that special car part for a fellow hot rod lover. Ron never met a stranger and enjoyed meeting new friends daily. He also enjoyed golfing with his buddies and attending his grandchildren’s school and sports activities. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church and the Good Guys Rod and Custom Association. He enjoyed cruising to numerous car shows, both near and far.

In the 1970’s and 80’s, Ron played the bass guitar, drums and stand up bass with local bands, including Sunshine Earth Band, Mixed Company and Tailor Made.

Visitation is Sunday March 26, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at HOENING FUNERAL HOME 242 W. Tiffin Street, Fostoria where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:45 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am Monday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Dominique presiding. A Rosary will be prayed at 10 am at the Church. Committal services and military honors will take place in the Veteran’s Memorial Chapel of Fountain Cemetery with burial following in St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery.
