O. Evans "Bill" Denney, Retired Trooper and Marshal, of Dover, DE died suddenly on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover.
He was 81.
Bill Denney retired as Major in charge of operations for the Delaware State Police in 1977 and as U.S. Marshal for Delaware.
Major Denney became a Trooper in 1958 after serving with the U.S. Army in Hawaii and working with the F.B.I. in Washington. He retired with the rank of Major and was named Assistant Secretary of State by Governor Pierre S. DuPont, IV in 1977.
In 1981, he became the first U.S. Marshal appointed by President Ronald Reagan, a position that he held for more than 12 years, serving in several national level positions for the Marshals Service. He retired as Marshal in 1994.
Mr. Denney is survived by his wife Joan; and children, Douglas Denney (Nancy), Paige Denney and Pamela Denney-Griffiths (James), Jill Sullivan (Daniel), Jeanette Hunter (Jermaine) and Alison Fletcher (Kyle). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Rob, Matt, Evan, Hannah, Chloe, Lillian, Jessica, Nick, Ashley, Alexus, Jemir, Jalah, Josslin and Luke.
Mr. Denney earned an Associate's degree from Delaware Technical Community College and a Bachelors degree from Wilmington University. He was a 32nd degree Mason at Harmony Lodge in Smyrna and belonged to numerous fraternal organizations including the American Legion, Association of Retired Delaware State Troopers, and Camp Barnes Association of which he served as Vice President. He has been a fitness buff winning numerous tournaments in tennis and had been a master shot with a revolver.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna, DE. Funeral services with full Delaware State Police honors will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 12 pm at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, located at 631 South State Street in Dover, DE. Burial will be privately held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, family members suggest contributions be made to Camp Barnes, Inc. (a camp for deserving children) in C/O Delaware State Police, P.O. Box 430, Dover, DE 19901 or to the Delaware State Police Museum, 1425 North Dupont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.
