Richard Arthur "Dick" Mettler, age 69, of Silver Lake (Mears), died peacefully at Harbor Hospice, following a short illness, on August 1, 2017.

Richard was the son of Charles and Margaret (Minich) Mettler. He was born in La Grange, Illinois on December 28, 1947.

Following his stint in the U.S. Army in the early 1970's, Dick went back to earn his degree at Michigan State University. After college, he settled near the family home on Silver Lake, near Mears, Michigan.

Dick's interests throughout his life included sailing his Hobie Cat, fishing, water skiing, boating, and hunting. Dick also had a great concern for the protection of our lakes and natural resources. Dick had a quirky sense of humor and was a lively and inclusive brother, son, uncle, and friend.

Dick is survived by his sister Pam Bankart of New Hampshire, and his brother Michael (Sandra) Mettler of Wisconsin, nieces and nephews, Tracy (Mitchell) Pinault and Kevin (Kathleen) Bankart of Massachusetts, Deanna Duray and Dennis (Ginger) Pleuss of Colorado, grand nieces and nephews, Andrew, Kristin, ReEnna, Evan, Reid, and Natalie. And treasured friends who stayed by his side and cared for him at the end.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Mary Pleuss of Colorado.

Services for Dick were private. Arrangements were handled by Harris Funeral Home of Shelby.

The family wishes to thank the kind staff at Harbor Hospice, as well as Dick's special, long-time buddies who cared for him and who will miss their friend.
