FORT WORTH - Geraldine (Gerry) White Haney Phillips, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, surrounded by loving family.

Gerry will be interred in Lamesa, Texas in a private ceremony.

Gerry was the last of a remarkable generation of the Louie C. White and Polly Garrett White children. The first of five children, she was born on April 27, 1923 in Dawson County. A 1940 graduate of Lamesa High School, she was deeply affected but not defined by the dust bowl and great depression. She was a happy, energetic optimist who enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. Gerry met James L. (Jay) Haney, a minor league baseball player, when she was just 16 years old. He was a confident young prospect who vowed to "take her to the big leagues" when they married in 1940 after her graduation. Although they never made it to the major leagues in 18 years of professional baseball, their marriage did. They were married 42 years until Jay's death in 1982 and raised a family that included three children, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. When Jay retired from baseball in Midland, Texas, Gerry began a 26-year working career with BTA Oil Producers. In 1984, Gerry retired and remarried a widower and long time family friend, Jake Phillips. They moved to Austin and were married 10 years. Gerry moved to Lago Vista when the marriage ended. She remained in the Austin area until 2015 when she moved to Fort Worth to be near her daughter, Polly.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Louie C. (Buddy) White, Jr, Robert Max (Corky) White, Keith Garrett (Totsy) White, and Thomas Bryant (Tom) White.

Survivors: Children and their spouses: Stephan Jay Haney (Nancy), Polly Annelle Crowell (Brian) and Robert Craig Haney; and her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
