Lewis, son of William Shockley and Mary Crawley, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 6 September 1861 at Camp Smart near McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee at the age of 23. He was mustered as a Private in Company C, 35th Tennessee Infantry (Mountain Rifle Regiment). On 20 February 1863 Lewis was transferred to Company I, 16th Tennessee Infantry. It is noted on his Compiled Military Service Record that he deserted near Shelbyville. Tennessee on 29 April 1863. No furthur documentation found on his CMSR. He received Confederate Pension #S3018 and after his death his wife received his Pension #W7303.

NOTE: His first name is spelled LEWIS on his service record not LOUIS.
