Levi G. Swartzentruber, 87, of Winesburg, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Walnut Hills Nursing Home in Walnut Creek.

He was born in Holmes County on March 27, 1925 to Gideon and Susan (Hershberger) Swartzentruber and married Iva Yoder on Jan. 14, 1951. She survives.

He was a member of Walnut Creek Mennonite Church, and was a self-employed residential building contractor for more than 50 years, building numerous homes in the Barberton, Akron and Canton area.

Levi's passion in life was his volunteer work. He served on the Holmes County MCC Beef Canning Committee for many years, having built its building near Berlin. He was actively involved with the Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale, logging thousands of miles distributing brochures and collecting pies, quilts and furniture items for the relief sale. He worked on several storm clean-up and rebuilding projects with Mennonite Disaster Services, including sites in Xenia and Panama City, Fla.

His volunteer work also took him abroad. He made four trips to Guatemala to assist with earthquake relief and rebuilding under United World Missions. He also made two trips to Papua, New Guinea, where he helped with construction of a school and hospital.

He enjoyed competition, whether it was fish or pheasants, ball games or table games and always had advice for those who were participating in an event, even though he had never played the game.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are children, Jim (Rachel Hofstetter) Swartzentruber of Jeromesville, Velma (John) Stauffer of Harrisonburg, Va., Richard (Kelly) Swartzentruber of Salem, Ore., Merlin (Vickie) Swartzentruber of Goshen, Ind., and Rose (Ed) Zear of Sugar Valley, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Eli, Dan and Gideon.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Mennonite Church near Winesburg, with pastor Don Hamsher officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Creek Mennonite Church Cemetery.
