Abner Holden was the fourth son of Deacon Joseph Holden and Abigail Shattuck. He was born in Watertown on November 2, 1722. His family moved to Westminster when he was 14 years old. As Abner grew to manhod with the growing settlement, he became, in his time, one of the foremost men of the town. He held many offices, such as selectman, assessor and town clerk, and was an influence on the public and private life of his generation. He was the magistrate of Westminster, as well as selectman, for nearly two decades.

He also took an active role in the relation between the Colonies and England. He was a member of the First Provincial Congress in 1774, a delegate to the Massachusetts State Constitutional Convention in 1779, and the first representative of Westminister to the General Court of Massachusetts.

On February 25, 1752, Abner married Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew Darby and Elizabeth Patch, at Westminister. Abner and Elizabeth were married for over 50 years, and had nine children. Abner died on October 22, 1805 at 82. He is buried in the Woodside Cemetery in Westminster.

Inscription

"Erected in Memory of Abner Holden Esq. who died 22 Octr. 1805 in the 82 year of his age. He came into this town in 1737, was one of the 2nd family that moved into this town and consequently partook of the hardships of a new settlement. As he grew in years, he grew in favour with his fellow citizens, but, has now ceased from his labour and gone to enjoy the rewards of the faithful"
