Maude was born to a mother of age 41 and a father of age 46, where she was the youngest of three daughters. Her sister Grace was six and her oldest sister, Virginia, was eleven at the time. Maude was promptly baptized at St. John's Catholic Church on July 13, 1919. She attended twelve years of school at St. John's Catholic School in Lima, Ohio. After high school graduation, Maude obtained employment as a typist working for the home office of the City Loan and Savings Co. in Lima. Her oldest sister Virginia likely was influential in her finding the position, as Virginia was employed by the same company as a private secretary for a Vice President.
Maude continued to live at home and was only 21 when her father died of cancer that had ravaged his body for more than a year. Two years later, on November 22, 1943, in St. John's Catholic Church (a few days before Thanksgiving) she married Robert Bernard Clement while he was on leave from the service. Bob had enlisted in the army and was serving our country as we defended Hitler's offenses. Her niece recalls Maude's first Christmas after her marriage, Bob was overseas and Maude was having a very difficult time accepting the circumstances. Maude had made a wreath for their front door and had a small tree with a few lights and ornaments sitting on a table in an attempt to celebrate the season. However, she was tearful as she spoke of how much she missed Bob and did not want to be without him on Christmas. I cannot assume the next Christmas was much happier, as I know Bob was serving in the Battle of the Bulge that was waged from December 16, 1944 to January 25 1945.

Maude was the only one out of her three sisters that actually enjoyed cooking. She was a dedicated homemaker and meticulous housekeeper. There was never any clutter in her home. She did a lot of canning and preserving. Even before she and Bob moved to their farm in Wapakoneta, she grew many vegetables to preserve. As I recall, one of her specialties was making tomato sauce. Their first home at 756 W. North Street in Lima was not small, but the farm house on Infirmary Road in Wapak was huge in comparison and was a modern brick house with all the amenities of the day (about 1957). Maude was 36 when her mother died, and her move to Wapak was shortly thereafter. Maude had lived at 733 S. Broadway in Lima with her parents until she married Bob, but he had been raised on a farm and was an industrious man. She adapted well to farm life. Here, her garden grew larger and she concentrated on her homemaking and mothering, becoming a member of the Christian Mothers Sodality. In Wapakoneta, the family were members of Saint Josephs Catholic Church.
