Civil War Union Soldier. Serving in Company C, 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private on August 2, 1862, and by April 1863 he had risen to Sergeant.

He was killed near the Klingel House near Emmitsburg Road with his Regiment while holding back a Confederate attack on July 2, 1863. He was buried where he fell until the Gettysburg National Cemetery was opened in November of 1863 where he was reburied. Misidentified as "James B. Rister", he now lies under a marker that does not give his correct name.

The attached photo of Sergeant Righter was taken in early 1863 and the photographer was DeCamp & Crane, No. 202 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey. The staining on the image is rust caused by a rusting Tin Type resting against it.
