Gene Ralph Mellott, age 76, found peace on February 6, 2012. Gene was born to Vernon Lee and Bessie Jane Mellott on June 3, 1935 in Needmore, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Genevia Mellott Ridenhour, Madeline Mellott Davis, Walter Vernon Mellott, and his beloved son Mark Lee Mellott.

On May 22, 1954 he married the love of his life Mary Ellen Barnhart. During their nearly 58 years of marriage, Gene and Mary were blessed with three children, Diane Eugeneia Bennett (Michael), Mark Lee Mellot, and Rene Marie Rodon (George); five grandchildren, Merrijo Bennett-Hale (Michael), Ian Bennett, Kevin Jenkins, Michele Rodon-Carver (Tom), and Carolyn Rodon; four great-grandchildren Tyler Hale, Drew Hale, Allie Bennett, and Maxwell Carver; and his favorite four-legged buddy Flipsy aka Snoopi.

Gene was affectionately known as "GR" to Mary, "Daddy" to Diane and Rene, and "Granddad" to his wonderful grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy; always looking out for everyone and making sure that everyone was doing well.

Gene proudly served our country for 20 years in the United States Navy. His time in the service took him and his family to many places on land and sea. After retiring from the military in 1971 in Orlando, Florida, he worked for the US Post Office and Walt Disney World for a few years and then decided to follow his entrepreneurial spirit and he and his wife Mary owned and operated an upholstery business in Central Florida until retired in 1999.

He attended Audubon Park Covenant Church where he was an usher, greeter, and wonderful friend to his church family. He was always helping with various church projects and activities.

He will always be remembered for his incredible love and devotion to his wife and family; his patriotic service to our country; his kind, quiet, and gentle nature; and his strong work ethic and willingness to teach. He was quite the handyman; always fixing or building something. He took great pride in everything that he did. He encouraged and believed in the value of hard work; teaching us to always do our best and take responsibility for what we did. He would always say "if you're not gonna do your best and do it right, there's no sense in doing it." He was a man of few words, but whatever he said was always filled with great wisdom.

"Granddad we got the rainbow you sent us. You will always be with us and we know that you will always be watching over us. You're the best looking Sailor in Heaven with the sweetest smile! We love you and miss you so much."
