A. Scott Hines Funeral Will Be Tomorrow

Services To Be Held At Home On Elm Street At 2 P.M.

Funeral services for A. Scott Hines, 69, who was serving his second term as mayor of Bowling Green at the time of his death yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home, 902 Elm street, are to be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence.

Burial is to follow in Fairview cemetery. The services are to be in charge of the Rev. G.W. Buchholz, Jr., rector of Christ Episcopal church. Mr. Hines was a member of that church.

GIVEN OATH AT HOME
Mr. Hines had been in poor health for several years, and his condition had been serious since last fall. He was too ill to leave his home for inauguration ceremonies last December 1 when his ticket went into office and was given his oath of office at his home by County Judge G.D. Milliken, Jr.

He was never able to leave his home after entering office. Mayor Pro Tem Gaston W. Cole has served as the presiding officer at meetings of the Common Council and carried on outside work of the mayor's office.

Mr. Hine's death automatically elevates Mr. Cole to the office of mayor, a position he will hold until the vacancy is filled at the next regular election.

The vacancy will require the election of a nominee in the August primary, and the office will be filled in the November election this year. The new mayor will go into office the first Monday in December.

NATIVE OF THIS CITY
Mr. Hines was a native of Bowling Green. He was born January 9, 1873, son of Henry C. and Sally Fore Hines. He was educated in public schools of Bowling Green, attended old Ogden college here and Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va., and had completed three years of study at the United States Military Academy at West Point when his father's death brought him back to Bowling Green.

He took over his father's business, the H.C. Hines wholesale and retail grocery business, changed it to an exclusive wholesale grocery house and operated under the firm name A.S. Hines and company after 1895.

FOUNDED IN 1865

The H.C. Hines Company was founded in 1865 and was the oldest wholesale and retail grocery business in the city.

Mr. Hines married Miss Annie Duncan Hines December 23, 1896, in Nashville. She survives with one daughter, Mrs. C.A. Welch, Washington, D.C.; two sons, Henry D. Hines of Nashville and Duncan L. Hines of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren; a half-sister, Mrs. Charles Leach, Palm Beach, Fla.; and three half-brothers, Logan Hines of Denver, Colo., Roy Hines of Palm Beach and Roland Hines of San Francisco. A brother, Captain John F. Hines, died last October in Philadelphia and was buried in Arlington cemetery. He was a retired army officer.

FIRST MAYOR IN 1925
Mr. Hines was a member of the Bowling Green Common Council and the Board of Public Woks for many years, and he served his first term as mayor 1925-1929.

He was nominated for his second term last August and successfully fought a contest suit filed by his Democratic opponent before he became ill. He was elected last November without opposition.

Mr. Hines' father also served two terms as mayor of Bowling Green, 1872-74 and 1880-1884.

Mr. Hines was a charter member and past president of the Bowling Green Rotary club. However, he had not been a member of the club for several years.

Prominent Man Passes

The death of Mayor A. Scott Hines deprives the city of one of its principal political leaders and outstanding citizens. As a member of the Common Council and Board of Public Works for many years and as mayor during the term 1925-1929, Mayor Hines actively participated in many important municipal projects not the least of which was modernization of the waterworks and the construction of the City Hospital.

His second term as mayor began last December and he continued the duties of the office as well as he could from the sick bed to which he had been confined for some weeks before the inauguration.

Mr. Hines was from a family that long has played an active part in local affairs. His own father served two terms as mayor of Bowling Green, the first of which began in 1872.

In reflecting upon Mayor Hines' life, both public and private, one immediately finds the fine characteristic of loyalty. He never proved disloyal to a friend and never forgot a favor.
