Born Hans Martin Carlsen, 1846 at Vejle (county), Hojen Sogn (parish), Denmark. Son of Carl Hansen & 1st spouse, Maren Nelsen. Carl & Maren had one other child, dau., Johannes b. 1844. Maren died bet. 1846 & 1847/48 as the oldest child of Carl & his 2nd spouse was b. in 1848 & Christiana was listed as spouse in 1850 Danish Census.
His father Carl's 2nd spouse was Christiana Sorensen. Carl & Christiana had 3 children, Maren b, 1848, Johanne b. 1853 & Soren b. 1855. All of the half-siblings of Martin Carlson immigrated into the USA & settled in Iowa with many family descendants moving on to California.
1860 DANISH CENSUS - Martin Carlson's grandfather, Hans Mortensen died in Denmark sometime after the 1860 Danish Census in which Hans is listed age 90, living in the household of his son Carl (Martin's father). Other family members were: Carl Hansen age 53 (father), Christiane Sorensdatter age 35 (2nd spouse), Hans Martin age 15, Maren age 12, Johanne age 7, Soren age 5.
1840 DANISH CENSUS - shows that Martin's father Carl had 2 sisters, Mette Marie Hansdatter age 24 & Ane Mette Hansdatter age 19. By 1840, Hans Mortensen (Martin's Grandfather) was listed as widowed, age 70 (b. abt. 1770).
