Hercules' parents were of Welsh ancestry. Hercules and his family moved to Marion County, Tennessee while he was young. While there, he married Elizabeth Robinson (a native of North Carolina); to this union ten children were born. By the Fall of 1830, Hercules, Elizabeth and their children had moved to Looking Glass Prairie in Illinois. After four years, he settled his family in Clinton County, Missouri. By 1838, he moved back to Clinton County, Illinois, staying there until 1848. Once again, the family moved to Missouri, specifically, Caldwell county.
